Our History

Tracing the roots of our cooperative journey, built on unity and trust.

How we came to be...
The Philippine Federation of Credit Cooperatives (PFCCO), originally established as the Philippine Credit Union League (PhilCUL) in 1960, stands as a testament to the commitment to fostering financial cooperation and empowerment among Filipino communities. Its founder, Atty. Alexander H. Brillantes, a CPA-lawyer and a dedicated cooperative advocate from the Baguio Benguet Community Credit Cooperative in Baguio City, envisioned a unified organization that would enhance the growth and sustainability of savings and credit cooperatives across the nation.

Under his leadership, PFCCO became a driving force in promoting financial literacy, collaborative growth, and mutual support among cooperatives. Atty. Brillantes also contributed his expertise as Assistant Director of the defunct Bureau of Cooperatives Development (BCOD), further solidifying his legacy as a pivotal figure in the cooperative movement.

Reaching its 50th year in 2010, PFCCO celebrated a half-century of service, progress, and innovation in strengthening the cooperative sector, affirming its role as a key institution in advancing social and economic development in the Philippines.

After five decades of unwavering dedication to strengthening the cooperative movement, the Philippines Federation of Credit Cooperatives (PFCCO) took a significant step forward on November 28, 2011, by registering as PFCCO-National under Cooperative Identification Number (CIN) 0305160008. This milestone marked its recognition as a "tertiary" cooperative, solidifying its role as the premier national network of savings and credit cooperatives in the Philippines.

As a unifying force for cooperative development, PFCCO-National became a cornerstone in fostering collaboration and innovation across its extensive network. It now serves as the Knowledge Management Center, supporting and empowering nine regional federations to drive sustainable growth and shared prosperity throughout the cooperative sector.
